Skin Issues: Could Your Body be Trying to Tell You Something?

We’ve all likely experienced some sort of skin issue in our lifetime—remember that pimply 7th grade class photo? But have you ever considered the root cause of your skin issues? Our bodies are always communicating with us, trying to let us know what’s up and how we can change things. While there’s certainly a time and place for getting a script from your physician, check out these four common skin conditions and see if you can cure them naturally!

1. Skin issue: Acne

Most of us experience acne during adolescence, but what’s up with still having acne when you’re 20, 30, or even 50? Some people are prone to breakouts and will require a doctor’s help to get it under control. More often however, acne reveals internal issues such as toxic buildup, bacteria imbalance, or hormonal imbalance that we can cure with a few changes.

How to fix it: Some research and theories exist about the cause of acne on certain areas of the face. If your body has too many toxins built up, try cutting down on your alcohol intake to give your liver a chance to detox. Hormonal acne usually appears around the mouth and chin and can be cleared up over time by reducing stress, exercising, and eating fresh fruits and veggies. Acne on other areas of the face can usually be cleared up with some simple dietary changes or by changing products like makeup or toothpaste.

2. Skin issue: Dry skin and/or wrinkles

Our skin changes as we grow older and wrinkles are nothing to be ashamed of! Wrinkles and/or dry skin however, can be a sign of dehydration and nutrient deficiencies.

How to fix it: Water, water, and more water. You can get a general estimate of how much water you need by dividing your weight in half and drinking that many ounces of water each day (175 pounds ➗2 = 87.5. So you’d drink 87.5 oz of water). And don’t forget about healthy fats like those found in avocados, fish, and nuts. Increasing water and healthy fat intake will help ease dry skin and also improve skin tone. Remember to give it about a month though… these changes don’t happen overnight.

3. Skin issue: Eczema

Eczema is characterized by patches of skin that are rough, inflamed, and often blistered or itchy. It is often caused by an allergy, food sensitivity, or stress, but can also be a result of leaky gut and toxic buildup.

How to fix it: You may need to determine if you have a food allergy or sensitivity. You can keep a food diary, which will help you connect outbreaks of eczema with certain foods you’ve eaten. Stress is also a common factor among people with eczema, so stress-reducing activities like exercising, deep breathing, and taking time to relax can help improve symptoms.

4. Skin issue: Rosacea

This redness you see on the cheeks appears when facial blood vessels enlarge. Again, a doctor’s input may be required here, but rosacea is often linked to toxic buildup, bacteria imbalance, and leaky gut. People who experience rosacea often have other conditions like Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, or chronic bloating.

How to fix it: The key to solving rosacea lies in the gut! A balanced diet complete with probiotics will often help improve or eliminate rosacea. You can get probiotics from foods such as Greek yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and other fermented foods. You may also consider an over the counter probiotic supplement, keeping in mind that there are many types of probiotics and it may take some time to find one that works best with your body.

If you suffer from any of these skin issues, we hope these simple tips will help! To dig into your body’s internal happenings, you may consider a blood test for deeper insight.
